GEM – Greet, Eat n Meet is one year old!

Have you heard of us, do you know what we do?

Please read on to find out, then maybe you would like to join us.

GEM was formed in February 2023 as a social group to serve local residents of all ages.

Previously a group called Sage Gardener had operated successfully for many years in the Lincolnshire /Nottinghamshire border area but sadly closed at the end of 2022.

A group of volunteers (some from the original Sage Gardener group and some new) came together to consider whether a similar group would be welcomed in the Collingham area and as the saying goes “the rest is history”. We now have well attended sessions in both Collingham and in South Scarle.

The aims of the group are to provide a safe and welcoming space for people to get together socially, enjoy some activities and have a simple but nutritious lunch.

All of these aims have been met with the help of the hardworking and dedicated volunteers, they are too numerous to name but thanks go to them all.

Special thanks must go to other organisations that have supported us:

· Newark and Sherwood District Council; who provided us with a start up grant to cover initial costs including the food hygiene training needed as we prepare and serve food at each session

· The National Lottery; who in late 2023 awarded a grant that will enable us to cover the costs of room hire for 2024.

· Collingham Village Care; who take the bookings (it is important for us to know numbers so that we can cater effectively) and also, if there are drivers available may arrange transport for local residents if required.

· The Collingham Parish Council Clerk; who looks after the finances.

· One Stop who generously donated items for our Christmas party.

Looking to the future,

GEM sessions are slightly different in each venue and anyone is welcome to attend either or both:

Collingham sessions at the Phoenix Hall run on alternate Tuesdays 10am – 1pm

South Scarle sessions at the Community Centre located within St Helena’s Church run on alternate Wednesdays 10am – 1pm

Sessions start with a welcoming cuppa and a biscuit. During the morning there is a quiz and lots of jokes, indoor and outdoor games, craft activities, a raffle and an exercise classes run by Adam of Gorilla Fitness.

Fresh air has, proven to be beneficial for well being so, we will, as the seasons progress make more use of the outside space at the Phoenix Hall and the garden/woodland strolls will continue in South Scarle.

Prior to going home everyone enjoys a light lunch of either soup and bread or quiche with salad and potatoes depending on the season and is always followed by homemade cake.

We suggest a voluntary donation of £3 if you are in a position to donate
